Last week, we introduced one of our newest team members, Dr. Scott Malm. Now, we’re getting to know toxicologist Dr. Michael Reilly of our North Little Rock office. Check out our Q & A below:
Tell us more about your educational and professional background.
I was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, one of the southernmost points of the U.S. I began college in “The Valley” as an art major, but quickly switched to biology. Initially, I thought I would head to medical school. However, I later decided to pursue a career in toxicology. That’s what led me to the Ph.D. program at the University of Texas (UT) in Austin. For nearly seven years, I served with UT’s Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology, where I studied—among other topics—how acute exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) during critical periods of brain development (e.g., gestation) can result in lifelong physiological and behavioral changes. I’m looking forward to using this extensive research experience in my new role at CTEH.
What will your duties as toxicologist entail?
Along with my fellow CTEH team members, I’ll be serving on the front lines of emergency responses across North America. I’ll be helping with data collection; preparation of sampling and analysis plans; and the dissemination of findings on incident sites and in surrounding communities. In addition, I’ll be serving as a member of CTEH’s Worker Exposure Response Program, a 24/7/365 service that helps those potentially exposed to chemicals in their workplaces.
Why did you decide to join CTEH?
CTEH is unlike any other company in the industry because it marries science and problem solving. It offers employees the unique opportunity to tackle real-life issues—from oil spills to chemical exposures—in real-time. Its supportive leadership team has created a dynamic workplace environment with a strong sense of camaraderie and mentorship among colleagues. The company’s commitment to serving others is contagious. Every day, it’s invigorating to come to work.
