When emergencies strike, knowing how to respond quickly can mean the difference between life and death. One of the most critical – and preventable – causes of death following traumatic injury is uncontrolled bleeding. In fact, severe bleeding can lead to death in less than five minutes without prompt intervention.

Recognizing the urgent need to equip everyday individuals with life-saving skills, the Stop the Bleed  program was launched to empower bystanders to take action and provide immediate aid until professional responders arrive.

About Stop the Bleed

The program’s mission is clear: the more people who know how to control bleeding in an injured patient, the greater the chance of survival. Inspired by the tragic lessons learned from mass casualty events, Stop the Bleed developed a curriculum that is accessible, practical, and critical for saving lives.

The course is designed to be brief yet impactful. It teaches participants how to:

  • Recognize life-threatening bleeding
  • Apply pressure to wounds
  • Pack wounds correctly
  • Use a tourniquet when necessary

Importantly, this course is open to everyone and can be taught anywhere there’s room to gather. The training typically takes about one hour to complete.

Why This Training Matters

Many job sites and remote locations are miles away from the nearest emergency medical facilities. Even in urban areas, ambulance response times can exceed five minutes—a crucial window when a bleeding injury is involved.

Minimal training and equipment can empower employees, teachers, students, and community members to intervene effectively. Having trained individuals onsite can stabilize a victim until professional help arrives, dramatically improving survival outcomes.

The Stop the Bleed course helps bridge the gap between injury and definitive medical care, ensuring that victims receive critical attention during those first vital minutes.
